I am a targeted American poet. I am not permitted to sleep. I breathe phosgene and tear gas every day. I am remotely monitored and made fun of by transceiver in my most intimate moments. I am too terrorized to leave my van, but spend every day and night imprisoned inside it.

Inexorable Loss

I used to write a lot of
Patriotic poetry ~
Just like all the rest of my work
As fine as poetry can be

But lately I must poison breathe
Each day before breakfast
I, although regretfully,
Find that now I must,

Instead, simply assure
My readers I am still alive
Losing hope, inexorably,
That I’ll ever thrive
