The Making of America

“Hippie ne’er-do-wells,” they said
“Dangerous reactionaries”
“Radicals,” “Unrealistic”
“Buncha stupid pinko fairies”

“How can you call yourselves men?
You don’t even wear a wig!
For respectability,
You don’t seem to give a fig!

Everyone knows some were born
To rule and some to serve
What’s this about ‘To every man
What he truly deserve’?

A chimney sweep deserves to be
A chimney sweep, and that is all
(So long as into such a fate
Our noble selves will sure not fall)

Complacently it is with which
We regard unfairness;
Intrinsic part our system of —
No, we could not care less!

We’re sure that dumb nineteen year old,
That silly Henry boy,
Pronounced his last and deathly words
Just to history annoy

For positively there no more
Ridiculous cause ever be
Than this of which you give the name
— What was it, ‘Liberty’?”…
