Christmas Morn

Upon this day we pleasure take
In wishing one another well
Good things to eat we cook and bake
We tender stories tell

And lift our voices up to sing
In tenuous harmony
Glimpsing evanescent moments
Of bright possibility

What happens if we choose to live
In every moment just this way
Rememb’ring to affectionate
Greetings to our loved ones say

If we extended all year long
Not just beneath this tree
All those gifted enablements
Make others happy be?

What if we volunteered to help
Perhaps just one or two —
If all of us did only that
We’d help more than a few!

It isn’t only Christmas day
We get a lump stuck in our throat
Seeing someone’s joy receiving
A beautiful warming coat

Nor just today the thoughtful gesture,
Word appreciation of
Brings that tear to other’s eyes —
Someone’s that we love

We’ll leave the red and green behind
But deeply in our hearts we know
Peace on earth, goodwill to men
Outlasts the winter snow
