When we give a compliment
We really try to do it right
Concentrating on the best way
To convey sincere delight
In genuine good praise of those
Whom we’re commenting on
Focusing receiver
And not giver upon

So when that near receiver
Caref’ly chosen words will hear,
More than our generosity
It’s their own virtues will appear
Highlighted and celebrated
Uncondit’ionally,
Nor seeking petty points to score
By speaking patronizingly
