“At least I’m not as badly off as that person over there” is a good first step to gratitude. But it’s very far from being the whole walk.

Love to Harm

How we love to harm each other
Love to make each other sad —
Why takes it others’ suffering
Before we can be glad?

Why can we not over ourselves
Celebrate control
Without some miserable one
To play th’submissive role?

Why can we not feel good
Unless somebody else feels bad?
Why takes it others’ suffering
Before we can be glad?
