“Outmoded” Poetry

You may talk about your fashion
In the presence of my passion,
Insist that modern standards be
Upheld — to incoherency —

You may desperately prate
About a style that’s “out of date”
“Hackneyed” and “derivative”
(Ought not let that poet live!)

Point and smirk and scoff and blame —
Truth of the matter’s just the same:
Despite your contortions infernal
My friend, good poetry’s eternal
