Activism’s Achilles’ Heel

How can you smile at that person?
Don’t you know what they have done?
Their babies all kill and then eat their nannies
And, my dear, I haven’t even begun!

Don’t acknowledge that person’s existence
I won’t even go where their slimy selves are
They have no redeeming characteristics
For them I will manifest nothing but war

And for you as well, whom I witness here — awful —
With folks I consider to be enemies
Communing as though they were act’ually people
Worthy of pleasing and of being pleased

What’s that you’re saying? I can’t seem to place it
In all of my militant categories
I dimly perceive you are trying to tell me
That you actually do represent — peace
