Best Effort

I can’t say that I’m sorry
For what is done — ’twas done
In hope that by my actions
Might happiness for all be won

And since what I intended
Was the very best for you
And everybody else concerned
I cannot those decisions rue

But I can say with all my heart
Say it, and mean it, too
I’m sorry my best effort
Did not work well for you

Perhaps if I had known back then
The things which I know now
I might have been enabled
To find a better way somehow

Though, looking back, I cannot see
What way that might be
At any rate, presently you’re
Set on resenting me

Since that’s what makes you happy
Feel free your wounded play script play
You won’t blame me — or maybe will —
For stepping out of its way
