Seeing the Seeds

Focus your gaze a little bit ahead
The outcomes of each situation see
Consider how by your words may be led
Others, and how, too, they your actions see

The Tao de Ching tells us to “see the seeds”
Of future situations ere they rise,
These indicators shaping present deeds —
Such are the actions of the prudent wise

For by this means, and very little work,
One with a shovel may go dig them out
Ere grow they into trees shadowy lurk
All our intended future lives about

But see the seeds, and tend them early on,
That you may rest a grassy sward upon
