Feed the Birds

Feed the birds, feed the birds
Your unwanted crust of bread
Feed the bees some sugar water
Plant them a nice flowerbed

Make the ants a trail of crumbs
And watch them march away
Feed the kids so they’ll be full of
Strength and vigor with to play

Feed the homeless man the dinner
Scraps you would have left behind
Put them in a clean container
Leave them for someone to find

Don’t wait till the hurricane
Or rising water take their toll
To discover you need other
Human beings to be whole

Come out of your self-made closet
Take a clearer look around
Witness all the suffering
With humility profound

Offer up that cup of coffee
Offer up some dinner too
Then somebody might take pity
When the hungry one is you
