It’s 1 AM, and the poet is up listening to sinister little sounds, and breathing poison. Shall we have a poetic offering?

We All Already Know

That still, small voice that murmurs
In our inner ears
Advising us to disregard
Our self destructive fears,
Reminding us our karmic debt
Is falling in arrears,
Encouraging our failing hearts
To rise past jealous peers,

Is overwhelmed by screaming ads
Promotional display
And threats that if we don’t conform
We will be put away,
Reminders we might money lose
If we take time to play,
And all of the exigencies
Of any ordinary day

But if we pay attention, if we
Listen with the heart
To the eternal wisdoms that
Its whisperings impart,
What beautiful adventures
That still small voice can start
Which lift our lives from dull routine
And turn them into art

For we’ll reach out to people
We never would have guessed,
For all their plain appearance,
Stand out above the rest,
Whom by our soft assistance of
We pass compassion’s test —
When such gaze at us gratefully
Well, that’s the very best

Of all of life’s experiences
Gv’n us here below —
The knowledge that we are of use
Causes souls to stretch and grow —
We blossom like so many flowers
In its warming glow —
That still small voice reminding us
Of all we all already know
