She Did the Work

Even when being pushed back
Back, and back, and back again
Even when under attack
Wielded her inspiring pen

Even when by jealousy
Banished disrespectful from
Realms to which such dedication,
Such a soul, are meant to come

Ignored, despised, betrayed, misled
Lied about, profiled
Gaslit, ripped off, railroaded
Belittled and reviled

Even when denied a home
Writing in a swelt’ring tent,
Or alternately freezing,
She did as she was meant

To do her fellow spirits for
That labor did not seek to shirk
Come what may, come any day
She did — she did the Work
