Equipoise

They don’t believe I like to be alone
In company the lovely Muses of
Imagine by so doing I have shown
Some act which violates my true-felt love

They don’t believe I prefer silence to
The malice of which much exchange is made
Don’t understand my peaceful point of view
For which by much exper’ience hath been paid

Amid the furor of humanity
Wherefrom I now have lesser need of speech
Unless benefit to one of us be —
Something to learn, to celebrate, to teach

In quietness I keep my equipoise
Between God’s silence and much human noise
