Well Pleased
Of course I know what Jesus Christ
Felt on the cross — so do we all
After all the pain and the
Humiliation of his fall
When his eyes went heavenward
His soul sank to his feet
Feeling he had gone down to
The ultimate defeat
“I’ve failed,” he asked his Father
“I have failed, isn’t that so?
— And humankind in ignorance
Continue will to go
For thousands more of years
Stretching forward from the now
I’ve failed, I’ve failed to show them
At all adequately how
Grow up to adults
May one and all spirit’ually
Requiring only loving truth
Keep clearly in our memory…”
We all have felt like failures
We all have felt the dud
We all have had our good names
Dragged through the stinking mud
We’ve all said to ourselves
It doesn’t matter if we live
Since we no worth unto the world
Worthy seem, ourselves, to give —
When, somewhere past the ceiling
Somewhere past the eaves
We hear a still voice whispering:
“…with whom I am well pleased.”
