Balderdosh
No more ludicrous business can there be
Than this of constant writing poesy
I move within (although you cannot see)
A sea of floating words surrounding me
God forbid I a glass of wine imbibe
For straightway starts the inner diatribe
Urging me this or that thing to describe
If wish continue call myself a scribe
If you knew how much of life’s precious time,
Whilst I might be exper’iencing sublime
Moments superlative yet in my prime,
I’m searching yet for yet another rhyme…!
Sometimes I think if others understood
This constant condundrum, why, then they would
Offer some rhymes themselves, all to the good
Reputation of their neighborhood
But no — I struggle onward all alone
So isolated midst my words have grown
Which words tend but to make their readers groan
I must suspect all sense from them hath flown!…
Originally meant to make them wise
Transform’d instead to merely low surprise
Politely smother their objecting cries
To my superlatively odd devise
O woe! O dear! Oh me! Oh my! Oh gosh!
Even this very verse is balderdosh!
