Today is a Good Day to Die
In the Lakota Nation
Danger’s never far away
No matter what apologists
For modern ways might say
There yet exist a multitude
Of natural enemies
The kind that feels most happy
When it others’ mis’ry sees
And when it hovers, threatening
These warriors will say
“Today is a good day to die”
Translates to “Hoka hey!”
Hoka hey! Today is good
To lay your life down for your love
Today is good to take with you
A piece your dread enemy of
Today is good to stand up for
The poor and dispossessed
To speak for the downtrodden
The burdened and oppressed
Let those who batten fatly on
The sorrows of the day
Fear greatly any warrior
Who sayeth “Hoka hey!”
