(This poet wouldn’t be in the position she’s in if her culture paid for classic, insightful verse even as much as it pays its messenger boys ~ enough to have a humble but decent home of her own)

Blind Leading the Blind

We pay tinkers, we pay tailors,
We pay skilled cabinet makers
We pay experts through the nose
Podiatrists to trim our toes
We pay automo mechanics
When our transportation panics
We pay cooks, and cleaners too ~
The one thing we don’t pay is you
Visionary? Oh, just stow it:
No one’s ’bout to pay a poet
