Unworthy Poetry

We try to bless our readers with the best
And brightest for which our minds ever reach
We try remind them to of visions bright
We try them ancient principles to teach

Eschewing both complacence and complaint
In favor affirmation’s glories of
We strive to write of all uplifting things
In life — of patience, selflessness and love

We strain ourselves, originality
And entertainment trusting aud’ience for,
To satisfy the need for beauty’s truth
Yet send them on their way still wanting more

But sometimes in the course of any life
Into discouragement we deep must fall
To write it out — the only working way
A poet knows to cope with it at all

In context of modern society
We tend at those times to embarrassed feel ~
Practice of ritual sobriety
Forbids discussions unpleasantly real

Yet notice, much to this poet’s surprise,
It happens over and over again
That, by humility, this exercise
Helps others ease their own personal pain

Though I may wish only to uplift bring
And for this cause put Muse unto the lash
She, better knowing of what we should sing
Rescues “unworthy” poems from the trash
