(When irresoluable conflict between people reared its ugly head, it’s been this poet’s policy throughout most of life to be the one to depart peacefully, leaving all the comforts of established life to her erstwhile companions ~ as well as the ability to say anything they liked about her afterward, and boy, did they ever! ~ and heading out, often under significant hardship, for hopefully more harmonious territories.

She hates to be a bummer, unsatisfactory or an inconvenience, in any way.

It is only now that trouble has followed her for 10,000 miles, scattering garbage in her path, locating smelly substances near the van and committing crimes around it in order to implicate her in all of it, that she has had to insist on her right simply to exist, as considerately as possible, in locations of marginal safety in our civilization.)

Yielding the Field

You may have what you cheated for,
For which you’ve basely lied,
Made promises on which reneged,
Sacrificed your pride

And aught true worth your being of
Which any may rehearse —
You go ahead and take this field,
I’ll take the universe
