(The poet can have all these things in “public housing” ~ but refuses to sign away her civil liberties, forego her pain medication, respiratory medication, and what she needs to write, and be treated at every “home”coming like a Junior High School juvenile offender to live there.)

Sweet Dreams This Poet May Never See Again

• Falling asleep without being wakened over and over (and over) first

• Awakening to sounds other than those of hatred

• Walking away from her van, ever, for any length of time, anywhere but directly under surveillance

• Frying a morning egg with homemade mashed potatoes

• Lying down flat at night

• Taking a hot bath

• Making a friend without being afraid for the friend

• Seeking a legal address without being afraid for the landlord

• Museums

• Performing for an audience

• Attending community events

• Creating sources of income

• Having a life
