(This poet would love to return ~ does return, each time, just as soon as she is given half a chance ~ to publishing uplifting poetry.

In the meantime, she publishes her reality as a marginalized citizen.

No one can live without sleep.

~ Though, beyond tragically, we have two million people living behind bars here ~ one half of which are there for crimes considered “victimless,” meaning they hurt no one but themselves ~ none of whom fall asleep easily for the very real threat of being awakened by rape, while their guards do nothing. Ask any excon.

Any. Excon.

Why does the poet not avail herself of the “housing” “services” her society makes so compassionately available?

Did you know that behind the front desks of all these new bulletproof-glass-and-steel highrises there’s a master lock?

That you can’t get into your own home in many of them unless you pass a breathelizer test first?

That any friend you’d like to have up for a pleasant cup of coffee will have their ID demanded of them on admission?

That friend had better leave by your curfew as well.

To live there, you will have signed away your right to entertain any overnight guests whatsoever.
