(If the poet lifted her curtains this morning to wholesome silence ~ if there is only one very cautious “bird” serenading her now, if vehicles suddenly noisy beside her van have been limited to two ~ it is because when difficulty arose in interfacing with her society, she:

Proceeded to her rights as an American citizen

… And began to raise public awareness.

Here’s the thing:

She could.

No one in uniform came to hussle her off at midnight, never to be seen again.

She hasn’t suddenly been informed that her disability stipend is discontinued.

She has been left free to raise more public awareness, if that’s what she thinks will benefit all involved.

She is an American.

And she likes to think that ~ even as a ragged and penniless poet ~ her work has a place in this Great Experiment.

The poet thanks historian Zambrotta of Italy for printing for compilation all posts and correspondences concerning her recent targeted victimization.)

“star spangled banner”

sung before every
civic event,
it serves
to inspire
and uplift all
within sound
of its magnificent
messages

it came
into being
at the hand
of a man
who stood amid the
raging battle

writing
poetry
